Mastodon doesn't support groups directly, but it does indirectly support "joining" it, by "following" the group, just like you would "follow" anyone. "Following" a group is the same as "joining" the group, in the traditional sense of "joining".
Just like in traditional groups, you would see group posts show up on your home timeline (similar to how Reddit or Facebook works), a "hack" that ActivityPub group actors went with is to "boost" ("Announce") a post.
