well, I tried, but I discovered that most of the design choices they made that I disregarded were actually good for my workflow. I tried returning to #Mate, #WindowMaker, #LxQt even #Enligthenment and #IceWm. They all felt somehow "hostile".
I never really liked #Kde, since 1997 (no joke), having tried it several times.
Never found the courage to move to a pure #tiling window manager.

I am using WindowMaker recently with great satisfaction... However my default DE is XFCE... Not sure what Gnome did good for you, but I can shape XFCE the way I want and I don't need to rely on any "designer" good choice...

Probably you may achieve the same with KDE but it has some huge designs defect that XFCE does not have.

I do acknowledge the value of minimalism but I'm also spoiled, as I demand live, system wide research in the file manager, pressing meta and typing something to be searched, be it a program, an email contact.
Type meta "PDF" to get PdfArranger firstly because I use it often.

fair enough, however I used to have installed synapse ten years before Gnome3/4, I stopped to use because these applications track you internally, and I never liked it. In terms of privacy Gnome is very loose therefore I don't trust it (e.g. lib-geoclue).

Long-story-short some functions exist way more time before Gnome 3/4...

I discovered that I work faster and better with all the bells'n'whistles provided by Gnome 3.
