I still would like to know what caused the sharp, instant, huge increase in #fediverse #servers at the begin of 2023… does anyone have a clue about it?
I'm going to guess it was elon musk mixed with a slow acceptance or interest in open source projects. But there might be more factors which contributed to the sudden spike.
This code gets all peers from mastodon.social. Goal is to collect maximum number of alive fediverse's servers and then query their API to obtain their registered users (if their API provide such information).
@paoloredaelli presumably it was because the existing servers were struggling to cope with the load of newcomers fleeing twitter? People were finding it difficult to find servers that were local to them, and then having arrived at Mastodon - they discovered there is more to the Fediverse, and people wanted to try out other platforms.
@paoloredaelli so far from a Google I can only find many many sites saying Tumblr is going to support it, but I haven't found any that says they now do. So I don't know if they have actually done it yet 🤷♂️
