Two questions regarding Hubzilla

Dear Hubzilla friends,

I've started my voyage on the Fediverse onboard of Hubzilla very recently. I came onboard at the beginning of February. So, I'd like to ask you two questions in order that you can help me (and other friends) better understand the way it can allow us to navigate the Fediverse.
  • [
]Which is/are Hubzilla's characteristics that you value the most?
[
]Which are its downsides (if any)?

Thank you very much for your cooperation.

Take care and stay safe!

characteristics that you value the most = you can to really really a lot of things
downsides (if you want to call it that) = you have to be willing to invest time to learn all about the options
that sums it up well.
I love Hubzilla's support for so many third party networks, not just Fediverse, but also Diaspora and others.

A downside for me is how quickly the database seems to grow in size. I can't seem to see a way of easily pruning that.
yes I also find it impressive how willing to co-operate with other networks Hubzilla is; there really are so many positives here.
yes certainly, as I mentione din my video on Hubzilla, they and Friendica, stand as real direct alternatives to something like Facebook, but with lots of inter-connectivity in addition, and no walled garden.
could you please direct me to your video?
my video on #Hubzilla is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9nCAOM5V1g or at https://odysee.com/@GadgeteerZA:4/Hubzilla:d. Realised I forgot to do one on #Friendica so I need to get to that soon.
thank you for such an informative video covering basics and a bit more. I wasn't asleep at the end but I did take a break in the middle :) I'll probably refer back to it, particularly to be reminded of what functions there are as an admin. It's really handy that it's broken up into chapters.
thanks for the feedback. Yes I try to rather put all the info in with chapters, instead of doing something too superficial. LOL can imagine me putting in an Interval gap in the middle in future ;-)
@Danie van der Merwe ✅ if you pull a lot of channels or rss feeds into your hub the database grows - but you can set to delete posts after a set period of time

just go to

[observer.baseurl]/settings/channel > Security and Privacy Settings > Expire other channel content after this many days
characteristics that you value the most = Hubzilla and ZAP are the only apps in the fediverse you can install easy on an a shared host - so self hosting a own hub is easy... @indigo what to have your own hub?
I would like to try having my own hub but I have only a vague idea of how hosting works. I don't have a server or anything like that and wouldn't even know where to get one. I'm assuming being hosted or shared hosting means I don't need my own server and it's like renting or borrowing another server..? I'll probably look it up and learn more about it, especially if there's an easy way to do this with Hubzilla.
yes - you don´t have to have an own server... just find a Webhost... like e.g. you need for a woedpress installation

You nee a Hoster which offers a packet with :
a domain/ or subdomain
FTP
a database
and a cornjob
A very easy way is to use a Webhoster which also offers the softaculous script...

https://www.softaculous.com/softaculous/apps/socialnetworking/Hubzilla

there you can do the installation with just few clips

find one:
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=softaculous+web+hosting&amp%3Bt=ffsb&amp%3Bia=web
https://zot.host/ is a specialized ZOT hoster
Here are some other Hosters which offer HZ:

https://www.knthost.com/hubzilla-hosting

https://apps.glowhost.com/socialnetworking/hubzilla/

https://www.a2hosting.in/hubzilla-hosting

https://www.interserver.net/apps/hubzilla-hosting.html

https://www.global-village.de/serverhosting/info-webapps-installer/hubzilla-642/
Thank you so much for your help, you've given me plenty here that I can look into and saved me a lot of figuring out where to start, thanks! :)
