Thanks for all the lovely attention & comments on our NASA/ESA/CSA #JWST image of HH212 yesterday, & welcome to everyone newly following.

On this wet, windy Sunday afternoon, I thought I'd combine all four of our recently-released JWST Cycle 1 star formation images into one post & mini-thread.

Namely the short- & long-wavelength mosaics of the inner Orion Nebula & Trapezium Cluster, and the protostellar flows HH211 & HH212.

A wide-field image of the inner Orion Nebula & Trapezium Cluster as seen at shorter near-infrared wavelengths (1-2.1 microns) by JWST. The image is predominantly blue due to ionised hydrogen, but there are regions of brown due to dust absorption and bright red due to emission from shocked & fluorescent molecular hydrogen. There are thousands of stars, brown dwarfs, & planetary-mass objects strewn across the region, centred on the Trapezium OB stars.
A wide-field image of the inner Orion Nebula & Trapezium Cluster as seen at slightly longer near-infrared wavelengths (2.7-5 microns) by JWST. The image is predominantly purple due to ionised hydrogen & green due to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, but there are regions of brown around the edges due to dust absorption and bright red due to emission from shocked & fluorescent molecular hydrogen. There are thousands of stars, brown dwarfs, & planetary-mass objects strewn across the region, centred on the Trapezium OB stars.
The protostellar outflow HH211 near the IC348 cluster in Perseus as imaged with JWST in the near-infrared (2-5 microns). The linear jet is purple and red due to shocked molecular hydrogen emission, with contributions also from carbon monoxide. There is some green reflection nebulosity along the flanks of the outflow, while the driving protostar is invisible at the centre. There are a few stars and some other molecular hydrogen emission strewn across the dark background.
The symmetric protostellar jet & outflow HH212 to the north-north-east of the Horsehead Nebula near the Belt of Orion as imaged in the near-infrared (2.1-5 microns) with JWST. The linear outflow comprises a series of knots and bowshocks on either side of the invisible driving protostar & is dominated by red/purple shocked molecular hydrogen emission. It is seen against a green nebular background of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission, & there are stars & many galaxies strewn across the background. Another pair of protostars with their own nebulae are seen near the lower end of the image.
