The hosted Jitsi service that many people in the Fediverse appear to prefer over, say, Zoom is operated by 8x8, a NASDAQ-traded public company.

I wonder how this makes Jitsi somehow more acceptable to the Fediverse than Zoom. Yes, I understand that Jitsi has an open-source implementation, but if you use a commercially-operated freemium service like https://meet.jit.si that appears to make very little difference re privacy etc.

What am I missing?

@Johannes Ernst I don't know about everybody else, but when I say that I'm using jitsi to do a call I'm not saying that I'm going to use meet.jit.si, I'm saying that I'm going to use the instance that I'm hosting myself for the use of the members of our LUG.

Before I did that I've also used instances hosted by various other LUGs and groups around Italy, and yes, a few times I went to meet.jit.si as a backup option, but it was more of a last resort.

And yes, the instance I'm self-hosting is on a commercial VPS provider, so the privacy isn't perfect, but it's good enough for the kind of conversations I'm having, and it's something where I can easily migrate elsewhere if the provider's reputation should drop.
