The hosted Jitsi service that many people in the Fediverse appear to prefer over, say, Zoom is operated by 8x8, a NASDAQ-traded public company.
I wonder how this makes Jitsi somehow more acceptable to the Fediverse than Zoom. Yes, I understand that Jitsi has an open-source implementation, but if you use a commercially-operated freemium service like https://meet.jit.si that appears to make very little difference re privacy etc.
What am I missing?
I fully understand, that if terms of service of an anonymous, free service are violated, rules must change and anonymous usage cannot be permitted anymore.
However, if the new authentication scheme requires an account at either Google or Facebook or Microsoft, with no other option, that leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
It is not a practical problem, because there are hundreds of alternatives available, but IMHO it sends the wrong signal.
