AI Industry is Trying to Subvert the Definition of "Open Source AI" - Schneier on Security
The Open Source Initiative has published (news article here) its definition of “open source AI,” and it’s terrible. It allows for secret training data and mechanisms. It allows for development to be done in secret.Bruce Schneier (Schneier on Security)
"The open source project DeFlock is mapping license plate surveillance cameras all over the world."
"On his drive to move from Washington state to Huntsville, Alabama, Will Freeman began noticing lots of cameras."
"Once I started getting into the South, I saw a ton of these black poles with a creepy looking camera and a solar panel on top. I took a picture of it and ran it through Google, and it brought me to the Flock website. And then I knew like, 'Oh, that's a license plate reader.' I started seeing them all over the place and realized that they were for the police."
"Flock is one of the largest vendors of automated license plate readers (ALPRs) in the country. The company markets itself as having the goal to fully 'eliminate crime' with the use of ALPRs and other connected surveillance cameras."
"And so he made a map, and called it DeFlock. DeFlock runs on Open Street Map, an open source, editable mapping software."

The Open Source Project DeFlock Is Mapping License Plate Surveillance Cameras All Over the World

"To all my writer friends that use MS Word - Microsoft has turned their Al bits and bots on to automatically go through anything done via Word. Here's how to turn it off. File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Privacy Options > Privacy Settings > Connected Experiences"
On the Mac I found it under Word/Excel/Etc > Preferences > Privacy, and near the bottom was the checkbox for "Turn on optional connected experiences" which of course was on by default.
Unsurprisingly, the opening speech is heavily focused on innovation and competitiveness😬
Like the European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen before her, Virkkunen commits to more #AI rules within 100 days - will she succeed where von der Leyen failed? 🤔

Generative AI Doesn't Have a Coherent Understanding of the World, MIT Researchers Find - Slashdot
Long-time Slashdot reader Geoffrey.landis writes: Despite its impressive output, a recent study from MIT suggests generative AI doesn't have a coherent understanding of the world.slashdot.org
We live in an amazing time — a Pakistani website specializing in the publication of fake news, created by AI to earn advertising revenue, posted an announcement of a non-existent Halloween parade in Dublin.
The article was picked up by search algorithms and rose in Google search results.
Journalists began spreading the news in their publications without even bothering to check it.
As a result, thousands of people came to the square, ready to participate in a parade that didn't exist.

#Debian classify the kind of #AI systems that the #OSI's #OSAID defines as #opensource, as #ToxicCandy: https://salsa.debian.org/deeplearning-team/ml-policy/-/blob/master/ML-Policy.rst
Without training data you cannot ecercise the freedom to study a #ML system and your ability to modify it is severely limited to fine tuning.
Which is like to say that windows is open source because you can tweak the registry.
For these reasons some open source developers are already moving beyond OSI: https://opensourcedeclaration.org

It's not just matter of securing the #OSD, but to update it with a truly open process, with all developers, artists, musicians, data scientists... who contribute their time and valuable skills to open source: https://opensourcedefinition.org/wip/
