Balimaya Project At Barbican Centre
Founded in 2019 by London-based djembe player Yahael Camara-Onono, the eighteen-piece Balimaya Project is an all-male ensemble dedicated to celebrating its members' African musical heritages, which it approaches as evolving, future-facing entities. The band blends West African traditional music—with a special emphasis on Mandé culture—with #jazz and other sounds of Black Britain.

Samara Joy is the real deal. She is a multi-generational talent, with the potential to be the greatest mainstream female #jazz singer since Vaughan, McRae and Betty Carter. That is high praise and is not made lightly.

The Most Exciting Jazz Albums Since 1969: 1969-1983
As a teenager of 18 in 1970, I was heavily into rock music, The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix and the Grateful Dead. I subscribed to Rolling Stone Magazine and really enjoyed the record reviews. One fateful day in May 1970, I read their review (by Langdon Winner) of Miles Davis's Bitches Brew.... So, I picked up the album and listened, and my life was never the same. #jazz

At the remove of sixty years, there is a temptation to say, "Ornette Coleman, so what?" His early music does not sound particularly out there. And by contemporary standards, it is not. The initial shock of Ornette Coleman in the mid 1950s wore off decades ago.
