Question! Why should local governments use taxpayers’ money to buy proprietary, closed software from a single vendor? And what happens to citizens' data? A solution is to move to free and open source software like #Linux and #LibreOffice – which is exactly what Schleswig-Holstein is doing: https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2024/04/04/german-state-moving-30000-pcs-to-libreoffice/ #foss #OpenSource #privacy

Do you work in open source? Do you think it has a funding problem? If so, please take my 10 minute survey at https://opensource.study. By participating, you can help provide an understanding of what has worked and what hasn’t in the ecosystem.

This survey is part of a research project at ASU and is completely voluntary. If you have any questions about participation, please reach out to me here.

#LibreOffice 24.2 is our latest big update, with many new features. For instance, in Calc, there's now a search field in the Functions sidebar deck. Find out more: https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2024/01/31/libreoffice-24-2/ #foss #OpenSource

#LibreOffice's quality assurance (QA) team is getting help from @csumb_it students! Here's what Steven Casey has been working on: https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2024/01/16/libreoffice-qa-help-from-csumb-students-steven-casey/ #foss #opensource

My old e-reader had some problems and needed to be replaced. I ended up exploring the hell that is DRM (copy protection) on e-books and tried to break the restraints so I can read my own legally acquired books with FOSS software. I wrote a blog post on it that describes my frustrations (another ideological rant) but hopefully also helps others in a similar position with some practical guidance: https://proycon.anaproy.nl/posts/do-not-restrict-me/

#Audacity now provides "AI" effects to do a bunch of interesting stuff:

The Music Separation feature seems to be quite similar to what Deezer developed back in the days:

https://github.com/deezer/spleeter

I still haven't taken the time to try this yet, but having this feature baked directly in Audacity is really nice!

“Monopolistic centralized video platforms can only be sustained by surveillance capitalism.

We wanted small groups (…) to be able to afford to emancipate themselves from Big Tech’s platforms (…). We needed to develop a tool to democratize videohosting, so it had to be designed with radically different values in mind.

And that is what we did. We build PeerTube to empower people, not databases or shareholders.”

Brilliant article! :peertube: 😍
