This violin plot shows nine pitch distributions side by side, each of which belongs to one of sub-corpora published in the dataset. Each distribution is plotted vertically as a violin spanning the keys of the piano indicated on the y-axis, outlining how prevalent each key is in the respective corpus. Since each violin also contains a box plot, and because all distributions are centered around the middle C4, the figure is vaguely reminiscent of nine vulvas in diverse colours. The composers are Ludwig van Beethoven, Frédéric Chopin, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Antonín Dvořák, Edvard Grieg, Claude Debussy, and Nikolai Medtner, none of whom had a vagina (probably).

Today I was trying to explain the “character of the keys”, where musical key settings having a different feel or “color” than other keys…I’m curious if anyone has a good discussion/illustration of the phenomenon?

= a general gradient, lasting several hundred years, where some keys tended to be tuned more in tune than others. 🎨🌈
Which shaped composers habits + pieces, leading to I’d argue persistent shading to each key despite equal temperament being the norm for ~100 years. 🤯
