Stumbled upon https://թութ.հայ in #mastodon IRC channel (libera.chat)

Opening the link with gnome-terminal's right-click
pointed #Firefox at the website, but copy-pasting the Firefox
URL back made it become: https://%D5%A9%D5%B8%D6%82%D5%A9.%D5%B0%D5%A1%D5%B5

A collegue told me that the correct way to use Unicode
in hostname (for DNS queries) is to escape them with an xn-- prefix,
like this: https://xn--69aa8bzb.xn--y9a3aq/

Was then what Firefox wrote in the clipboard bogus ?

for me, it round-trips fine from Firefox to gnome-terminal and back to Firefox. I suspect it's some other part specific to your setup.

@lnicola my trip started from terminal. Next time I'm on the desktop I'll report the version of Firefox and maybe more detail on some other component.

Meanwhile don't forget to post your #presentation and maybe enable discoverability options in your account preferences.

Welcome in the #Fediverse !

@strk how did the URL end up on the terminal? Does `echo https://թութ.հայ` work?

And thanks for the welcome!

@lnicola I'll have to try BUT in order to type that I would use copy&paste because I've no idea how to otherwise type those characters. When it failed, my copy was from the URL bar of Firefox.

Copying your post text from Firefox pointed at friendica.opencloud.lu Friendica node and pasting it into the terminal worked fine. So it is just copying form the URL bar that fails (I double-checked, still fails)

The url was pasted from the Xorg clipboard into the terminal (right-click -> paste) where it was copied from Firefox (right-click -> copy)
