My (very pessimistic) prediction on how performance will change once #Mastodon is rewritten in #Rust

- 3x the number of requests per second
- 5x less memory usage

And in case you didn't know:
@dma is working on it:

Thank you @dma 😘

I'm really looking forward to it. :ferris:

#Google already did with #XMPP: first supporting it in #GoogleTalk, then "defederating" other servers then dropping XMPP. A classic example of Embrace, Extend, Extinguish! #AvoidGoogle @janriemer @dma

I think you're right: people are much more conscious today, painfully aware of the subtle trickeries of big corporations @janriemer @dma

The federation is extremely vulnerable to EEE and centralization, just like it happened to email. If the main instances start federating with proprietary services it's game over. #AGPL can help a lot but we probably also need a network of #nonprofits to run the servers.

Yes, I agree + we need a max cap for user registrations so that instances won't get too big (to fail).

Happy, that this discussion goes into a slightly more productive direction now than just "change your license!" or "you are evil!". This kind of tone doesn't help anyone.

Why not just ask @dma why they've chosen Apache license instead of AGPL? I'm sure that there is a good reason for it.
