Many times people say they don't like SMS OTP, but what they seem to miss out is, unlike software that runs independently on our devices without a server or don't need to interact with others, a messaging app choice is much more complicated. Looking at it as a binary of either
1. making the exact compromise of using centralized platforms for our contacts or
2. staying isolated on our federated platforms (#Matrix, #xmpp)
is not really scaling up or we are losing out.

🧵 The #FreeSoftware / #OpenSource status of #Matrix, #Element and other related projects is in serious trouble. The main company running the ecosystem, @element, will fork the main projects from their previous steward, the @matrix Foundation, make AGPL-3.0 the new default license, and put a #CLA in front of it.

This is a common scheme called Rights-Ratched-Model as coined by @webmink. I see a number of upcoming changes that are bad for user freedom, interoperability and communities:

L'ideale sarebbe un'applicazione completamente decentralizzata: #jami, #session, #deltachat, #matrix ed #xmpp (ed altre che sicuramente ho dimenticato)

FYI #matrix / #synapse already does #selfhosted #federated #e2ee chats. If masto is fake-twatter and pixelfed is fake-insta, matrix is fake discord. (With real security, and no higher barrier to entry - or hosting - than masto.)

That said, I am about to tear my instance down for unrelated reasons (mostly I don't need "fake discord" as much as I need the headroom and disk space back in my cluster)

We have a "problem": we have far too many IM programs: #Jami, #Session, #Signal, #SimpleX, #matrix clients, #xmpp clients, #Briar, and I'm sure I forgot someone else. Of course I'm grateful to all those smart people developing them but I don't know what to suggest to non technically savvy people, who are easily confounded. 😢😢😱
